Last spring Fleet Feet Raleigh approached me about designing a new space due to their growth in the Ridgewood Shopping Center. It was clear there would be many constraints, but in the end those constraints helped guide much of the design along the way. In contrast to their old space, Fleet Feet wanted a industrial, yet clean, minimal aesthetic.
An art gallery occupied the space when we found it + it was clear from the outset that the carpet + old tile ceiling would need to be removed for the design aesthetic to be achieved. It would not be an easy task. Old walls would need to be demoed as well for storage needs to be met.
A second constraint loomed. Many of the existing retail display fixtures in the old space would need to be reused with new ones. This provided a significant challenge in providing a cohesive look between old + new fixtures. Again, the budget helped push design choices, but in the end sacrifices and design challenges were met. Floors were stained black concrete (with a natural stained running lane - see slideshow below). Ceilings were painted white open web joists. + new fixtures were brushed chrome to match existing fixtures.
In all, Fleet Feet Raleigh's space increased from roughly 2300 square feet to about 3400 square feet. Storage vs. sales floor analysis were done to make sure that storage would be adequate for expansion. It was a great opportunity to design (and eventually work) in a space with a very minimal aesthetic. A big thanks to the Fleet Feet Raleigh staff for their incredible work + assistance on the project. Year in Review
Good friend Peter Kusterer has reviewed several of my Clean Living projects on his blog. He recently wrote another article almost exactly a year later on where I am + where several of my colleagues are in this current economy.
See where we are after the jump.

As with all graphic design a good bit of process is involved. Several iterations are created off of the client's ideas + feedback. Here's a snippet of some of the ideas that went into Craft Construction's logo.

Visio Dei LOGO DESIGN
WEB DESIGN
I've had the priveledge to design on a couple websites/blogs (including this one you are visiting). Here's a few links:
Jack the Radio (Raleigh, NC): www.jacktheradio.com - local blues, rock band Jack the Radio is making waves locally + needed simple blog/web layout to converse with fans.
Silver (Raleigh, NC): www.silvermusiconline.com - this local rock, pop trio needed a clean + minimal site to help get there music across to their fans. Simple links were integrated at the top of the blog with interactive widgets to the side.
Clean Living (Raleigh, NC): www.designsforcleanliving.blogspot.com - an architecturally based project focused solely on bringing better green residential design to ALL people. Again a blog layout was needed with simple twitter + social media integration to help document the process of design.
Visio Dei Worship (Raleigh, NC): www.visiodeiworship.blogspot.com - a relatively new church, Visio Dei wanted something simple that they could convey their worship ideas to their audience without too much other stuff happening on the site. This blog was started to specifically focus on "worship" + help connect the audience with staff + bigger things happening in the church.
More to come!
